CHENNAI: Chennai Super Kings are set for a rebuild ahead of the next IPL season after missing out on the playoffs for the third straight year in 2026. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad’s form is a major concern for the five-time champions.
With Sanju Samson already part of the squad, speculation is building that a leadership change could be on the horizon.
Former India cricketer Sadagopan Ramesh believes CSK should seriously consider Sanju for the captaincy if the franchise decides to replace Gaikwad. He pointed to Sanju’s experience of leading Rajasthan Royals over several seasons as one of his biggest strengths. Ramesh shared his views in a video posted on Instagram.
“It looks like Chennai are considering several options for the captaincy. They are also thinking about whether a change in captain is needed. If they decide to make a change, Sanju Samson should be seriously considered,” Ramesh said.
Sanju has led Rajasthan in 66 IPL matches, winning 33 of them, giving him a 50 per cent win rate. Under his leadership, Rajasthan reached the IPL final once and the playoffs on another occasion.
“He is an excellent team player. He has the experience of leading an IPL team for several years, which is an important factor in his favour,” Ramesh said.
At the same time, Ramesh made it clear that changing the captain alone would not solve CSK’s problems.
“Making Sanju the captain alone will not solve Chennai’s problems. The team needs several changes. But if they decide to change the captain, Sanju should definitely be considered seriously,” he said.
Questions over Gaikwad’s position as captain have grown after his disappointing 2026 season. He scored 337 runs at an average of 28.08. He also recorded the lowest strike rate among batters who opened the innings in the powerplay, adding to concerns over his performance. There have already been suggestions that Gaikwad should be relieved of the captaincy and allowed to focus solely on his batting. Former CSK player and India batter Subramaniam Badrinath had also previously called for a change in leadership.
With Sanju now part of the CSK setup, the franchise faces an important decision ahead of the next season. Whether he takes over as captain or not, Ramesh believes CSK will need more than a leadership change to return to their best.
