Why celebrate Makar Sankranti?
Although the Sun changes its zodiac sign every month, but the festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated only when the Sun enters the Capricorn sign, there is a special reason behind it. According to astrology and astronomers, after entering Capricorn, the days become longer and the nights become shorter. That means the Sun is visible to us for a longer period. This position of the Sun is considered more important for life. Therefore there is a tradition of celebrating the festival of Makar Sankranti.
How many Sankranti occur in a year?
According to astrologer Pt. Dwivedi, whenever the Sun leaves one zodiac sign and enters another, it is called Sankranti. Sun stays in one zodiac sign for 30 days and few hours. In this way the Sun completes one zodiac cycle in approximately 365 days. During this period, whenever the Sun changes its zodiac sign, it is called Sankranti. In this way there are a total of 12 Sankranti in a year. On all these Sankranti, worshiping Sun God and donating to the needy is considered to have special significance.
