Makar Sankranti 2026 Date: There is often confusion regarding the dates of festivals in India, and this time something similar is happening regarding Makar Sankranti 2026. According to astrologers, this year it is considered better to celebrate the festival of Makar Sankranti on 15th January. But why is this so? There are two biggest astrological reasons behind this and at the same time a rare coincidence is taking place which has come after 23 years. Let us know.

Sun’s transit and time of Punya Kaal

According to astrology, Makar Sankranti is celebrated only when the Sun leaves Sagittarius and enters Capricorn. In the year 2026, Sun God will enter Capricorn at 3:13 pm on January 14. There is a rule in the scriptures that if Sankranti occurs after noon (near sunset), then it is best to perform its full auspicious time and charity bath at sunrise of the next day. This is the reason why celebrating Makar Sankranti on 15th January is considered as per the scriptures.

Recognition of Udaya Tithi

In Hindu religion, Udaya Tithi is the date which is present at the time of sunrise, which has special significance. Since the change of Sun’s zodiac sign is taking place in the afternoon on 14th January, the date of Sankranti will be effective when the sun rises in the morning of 15th January. Due to this Udaya Tithi, in most parts of the country, holy bath, Surya Arghya and charity will be done on January 15 only.

Rare coincidence after 23 years: Obstacle of Shattila Ekadashi

This time there is a very interesting thing associated with the date of Makar Sankranti. Shattila Ekadashi is also falling on 14th January. Astrological calculations show that such a coincidence occurred approximately 23 years ago in the year 2003.

Why is there confusion about eating khichdi?

On Makar Sankranti, mainly rice and dal khichdi is eaten. But consumption of rice is considered prohibited on the day of Ekadashi. In such a situation, it will be difficult for those who keep fast on Ekadashi to celebrate Sankranti on 14th January. For this reason, scholars are of the opinion that on January 14, you should consume sesame, jaggery and fruits. Then the next day i.e. on 15th January, eat the traditional food of Sankranti i.e. Khichdi and donate it.

spiritual significance

From a religious point of view, it is very auspicious for the Sun to enter Capricorn and the Ekadashi date of Lord Vishnu falling at the same time. It is being said that it is a wonderful union of Vishnu-bhakti and Surya-element. Therefore, donations and worship done on this day will be many times more fruitful than on normal days.
