First Woman Officer Indian Army: Before 1992, women could serve in the Indian Army only in the role of doctor or nurse. But a young law graduate woman from Himachal Pradesh thought why can’t I also wear the uniform? This woman was Priya Jhingan, who wrote a letter to the then Chief of the Indian Army, General Sunith Francis Rodrigues and requested that women should also be given a chance to become officers in the army. The answer he received a few months later changed history. The Army opened the doors for women under Short Service Commission (SSC).
Major Priya Jhingan’s Officers Training Academy Journey
The year 1992, something historic was about to happen that morning at the parade ground of the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai. A young girl was stepping on that field shining in the sunlight and at that very moment a new chapter was being written in the history of the Indian Army. Her name was Major Priya Jhingan, who will always be remembered as Lady Cadet No. 1. She became the first woman officer to join the Indian Army in a non-medical role.
First lady cadet Priya Jhingan got commission in JAG branch
On 21 September 1992, when 25 female cadets started training for the first time in OTA, standing at the forefront was cadet number 001- Priya Jhingan. His dream was to live a different and special life. After rigorous training, he was commissioned in the Judge Advocate General (JAG) branch, which deals with the legal matters of the army. She served the country in uniform for the next ten years and then retired with the rank of Major.

After Priya Jhingan, many women officers joined the Indian Army
Even after retirement, Priya Jhingan’s passion did not end. She chose the path of journalism and teaching and became an inspiration for the new generation of women. She says, the uniform never leaves you, it becomes your identity. She opened the way for the entry of women in the Indian Army and many women came after her, including Colonel Geeta Rana, the first woman to command an army unit on the China border. Lieutenant Bhavana Kasturi, the first woman to lead an all-male contingent on Republic Day. Captain Tania Shergill, the first woman Parade Adjutant of the Army Day Parade. Lieutenant General Madhuri Kanitkar, one of only three women to hold a three-star rank in the Indian Armed Forces.
