New Delhi: Mahindra’s rugged SUV, the Thar, has just received its most significant update since the current generation was introduced five years ago. Priced from ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the 2025 Thar facelift brings changes inside and out, along with some much-needed tech upgrades. The SUV continues to retain its tough off-road DNA, but this time it borrows design and comfort elements from Mahindra’s bigger Roxx SUV.
What struck me while going through the update is how much of it is about convenience. For years, owners have complained about missing basics like rear AC vents, modern infotainment, and even something as small as an internal fuel-lid release. This facelift seems to fix many of those long-pending issues.
Mahindra Thar 3-door facelift: Price and variant details
The Thar facelift comes in multiple trims, spread across petrol and diesel engines with both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and four-wheel-drive (4WD) layouts. Here’s how the prices stack up:
- AXT RWD MT (1.5L diesel) – ₹9.99 lakh
- LXT RWD MT (1.5L diesel) – ₹12.19 lakh
- LXT RWD AT (2.0L petrol) – ₹13.99 lakh
- LXT 4WD MT (2.0L petrol) – ₹14.69 lakh
- LXT 4WD MT (2.2L diesel) – ₹15.49 lakh
- LXT 4WD AT (2.0L petrol) – ₹16.25 lakh
- LXT 4WD AT (2.2L diesel) – ₹16.99 lakh
That’s a wide price band, stretching almost ₹7 lakh from base to top-spec. It gives plenty of choice, but also makes it clear the Thar now aims to appeal to both lifestyle SUV buyers and hardcore off-roaders.
Mahindra Thar 3-door facelift: Exterior updates
Visually, the SUV is still unmistakably a Thar. The facelift adds:
- A new body-coloured grille and dual-tone bumper.
- Rear-view camera mounted on the spare wheel.
- Windscreen washer and wiper.
- Keyless internal fuel-lid operation.
The facelift also brings two fresh paint options: Tango Red and Battleship Grey, joining four other shades already on sale.
Mahindra Thar 3-door facelift: Cabin and comfort
Inside is where owners will probably feel the biggest difference. The dashboard design and some bits have been lifted from the Roxx, giving the Thar a more upmarket look. Highlights include:
- A new 10.25-inch HD touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
- Wireless charging pad and 65W USB Type-C ports.
- Door-mounted power windows (finally back where they belong).
- Armrest with storage, cupholders, and grab handles for easier ingress.
- Rear passengers now get AC vents and a Type-C charging port.
- Adventure Stats Gen II, showing off-road data like altitude, steering angle, and temperature.
It is still not luxurious in the traditional sense, but this feels like a big leap compared to the earlier version.
Mahindra Thar 3-door facelift: Engine and off-road kit
There are no changes under the hood, and that might actually be a good thing. The Thar continues with:
- 1.5L mHawk diesel – 117 bhp, 300 Nm, manual gearbox only.
- 2.2L mHawk diesel – 130 bhp, 300 Nm, manual and automatic.
- 2.0L mStallion petrol – 150 bhp, 300 Nm (MT) / 320 Nm (AT).
Off-road numbers remain the same too: 41.8° approach angle, 27° ramp-over, 36° departure angle, and 650 mm water wading depth. All those make the Thar one of the most capable factory-built SUVs in this price bracket.
