Mahavir Jayanti 2026: Every year, the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir is celebrated with pomp and joy on the Trayodashi date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. Lord Mahavir’s birth anniversary is an important and sacred festival for Jain people. This year, the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir will be celebrated on 31 March 2026. Lord Mahavir was the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism.
He inspired people to follow religion and truth. Also publicized. Lord Mahavir gave many important principles to live life. The Panchsheel principles given by him are considered one of the basic principles of moral and ethical principles of Jainism. These principles teach us to follow the path of non-violence, truth, restraint and self-purification in life.
Major Panchsheel principles of Lord Mahavir
Nonviolence: Lord Mahavir has given a message to avoid violence in every situation. He has said that do not hurt any living being through mind, words and deeds.
Truth: The person who follows the path of truth overcomes even a difficult path like death. This is why he always inspired people to speak the truth and stay away from lies.
Asteya: Lord Mahavir has asked to follow Asteya. That means, do not accept anything which is not given willingly. By doing this one always remains calm in life.
celibacy: This means that you control your senses and desires.
Aparigraha: By practicing Aparigraha, the spiritual consciousness of Jains develops. They stay away from material things and luxuries of the world.
How is Mahavir Jayanti celebrated?
On the day of Mahavir Jayanti, people of Jain religion take out Prabhat Pheri in the morning. After that the Palki Yatra is taken out with a grand procession. After this, Mahavir Swami is anointed with gold and silver urns and flags are hoisted on the peaks. On this day, Jain community organizes many programs throughout the day.
