Why is Mahavir Jayanti celebrated?

According to the Panchang, Lord Mahavir was born on the Trayodashi date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. He was born in the royal family of Kundalpur, Bihar in 599 BC. Vardhaman, son of King Siddhartha and Mother Trishala, gave up a luxurious life and took sannyasa in search of self-knowledge at the age of 30. After 12 years of rigorous penance he conquered his senses, due to which he was called Mahavir.
