In the year 2026, the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month will start on 15th February at 05:04 pm and will end on 16th February at 05:34 pm. This fast is considered a little difficult as compared to other fasts because it requires mental concentration along with physical restraint. Eating right during the fast not only keeps you energetic, but also helps in making your puja successful.
Do not let there be lack of water in the body during the fast of Mahashivratri. You can consume fresh fruit juice, coconut water and lemon water. Among fruits, fruits like banana, apple and plum are good sources of energy. If you are eating a non-vegetarian diet, then items made from buckwheat or water chestnut flour and sago khichdi can be used. Eating potatoes boiled or cooked in less oil also helps you stay active throughout the day. Keep in mind that the diet should be light and easily digestible so that the mind remains focused on worship.
Avoid eating these things on Mahashivratri
Consumption of some things is considered completely prohibited during the fast. Grains like wheat, rice and pulses should not be consumed at all on this day. Also, use only rock salt instead of ordinary salt in food. Stay away from Tamasic substances like onion, garlic, meat and alcohol. Avoid eating canned juices or heavy fried food available in the market, as this can increase laziness and hinder your spiritual practice. The main objective of this fast is to observe purity and righteousness.
Importance of things made from milk and dry fruits
Mahadev loves milk very much, hence consuming things made from milk during the fast is considered very good. You can enjoy milk, curd, cheese and makhana kheer. Dry fruits like almonds, walnuts and cashews keep you from feeling hungry for a long time and provide mental strength. Consuming these things keeps positive energy flowing in your body. Keep in mind that during the fast, avoid consuming too much sugar or sweet things so that you do not feel thirsty again and again and you feel comfortable.
Correct way of Parana and attention to health
End the fast i.e. Parana at an auspicious time after 06:59 am on 16th February. Do not eat heavy food immediately during Parana, rather start with water or light fruits. Even after breaking the fast, only Satvik food should be consumed so that the body remains balanced. If you have any health related problem, then be careful before observing the fast and do not follow too strict rules. Mahadev sees only your devotion.
