Rules of Mahashivratri Fast: The holy festival of Mahashivratri is the celebration of the union of Shiva and Shakti. in the year 2026 Mahashivratri It will be celebrated on 15th February, the date of which will start at 05:04 PM on 15th February and will end at 05:34 PM on 16th February. This fast observed for the devotion of Mahadev is a symbol of self-discipline. According to religious beliefs, this fast has some strict rules which are considered necessary for every devotee to follow. Only by following the rules religiously is there a possibility of getting the full results of the puja.
People observing fast on Mahashivratri should wake up early in the morning and wear clean clothes after taking bath. On this day, it is mandatory to observe celibacy and completely stay away from Tamasic food like garlic, onion or meat and alcohol. Do not harbor any feelings of anger or hatred towards anyone during the fast. If you are observing a fruit fast, then use only fruits, milk and rock salt. On this day, one should keep reciting Shiv Chalisa and chanting the mantra “Om Namah Shivay”, due to which the concentration of the mind remains and the sanctity of the fast is protected.
What to do if you break your fast unknowingly?
Many times the fast is broken due to health reasons or unknowingly, due to which the devotees become sad. If this happens, first of all keep your mind calm and do not panic. According to the scriptures, if the fast is broken unknowingly, then one should sincerely pray to Mahadev for forgiveness for one’s mistake. After this, take bath again and anoint Shivling with Ganga water or milk. Mahadev is extremely kind and innocent, he gives priority to the intentions of the devotee and the love in his heart. Worship done with a sense of forgiveness is helpful in removing the faults.
Work to be done when fast is broken
If the fast is broken accidentally, some simple measures can be taken as repentance. On this day, donate white things like rice, milk or white clothes to a needy person as per your capacity. Chanting Mahadev’s Panchakshari Mantra 108 times is also considered very good for purification of the mind. Additionally, donate a lamp to the temple in the evening and perform the aarti of Lord Shiva. This action helps in regaining your confidence and providing mental peace. Remember that dedication is the biggest rule in devotion.
Balance between health and faith
Mahashivratri fast is for purification of body and mind, hence it should be observed as per one’s physical capacity. If a person is sick or elderly, they should focus on mental worship rather than following very rigid rules. Mahadev only sees emotions, he never wants to see his devotees in pain. Drink enough water during the fast and keep yourself healthy. Only efforts made with proper restraint and true devotion bring happiness and peace in your life and increase the chances of getting relief from all troubles.
