– Once upon a time there lived a hunter named Gurudruha in Kashi. He used to run his family by hunting animals. Once on the day of Mahashivratri, Gurudruha went to the forest for hunting. Due to not getting any prey throughout the day, he became sad and at night he climbed a Bilva tree and sat down.

– There was also a Shivalinga under that tree. Gurudruh saw a deer coming near him. As soon as Gurudruha put an arrow on his bow to kill him, some leaves of the Bilva tree fell on the Shivalinga. Due to this, he unknowingly worshiped Lord Shiva in the first half of Mahashivratri.
Seeing the hunter, the deer said, ‘Don’t kill me now, my children are watching my path.’ I will leave my children at a safe place and return to you. Guru Druh took pity and left the deer alive. After waiting for some time, Hirni’s sister came there.
This time too, as soon as the hunter put the arrow on his bow, Shivalinga was worshiped unknowingly. Hirni’s sister also left from there asking her to leave the children at a safe place. After some time, the deer came there searching for his doe and children.
This time also the same thing happened and in the third hour also Lord Shiva was worshiped with Gurudruha. After some time, both the deer and the deer themselves came to Gurudhruh as per their promise. To kill him, Gurudruha put an arrow on his bow and Lord Shiva was worshiped even in the fourth hour.
-Gurudruh had not eaten anything for the whole day. In this way, unknowingly he also started fasting and worshiping on Mahashivratri, due to which his intellect became pure. As soon as his mind became clear, he gave up the idea of killing voiceless creatures. Then, pleased with him, Mahadev himself appeared there.
– Shivji gave a boon to Gurudruh that ‘Lord Shri Ram will meet you in Tretayuga and will honor you by making you his friend. This hunter became Nishadraj in Tretayuga. One who listens to this story on Mahashivratri, his fast is completed and all his wishes are also fulfilled.
