Why did Lord Shiva change his form?
It is said that Lord Shiva took the form of an old ascetic (celibate) and approached Mother Parvati. In this form he started criticizing Shiva himself. They started saying that Shiva is a person who spreads ashes, is vulgar and a recluse, and it is not appropriate to marry him. Hearing this, Mother Parvati got angry. While explaining to the ascetic, he said that Lord Shiva is the best and his devotion towards him is unshakable. She clearly said that no matter what happens, she will not accept anyone other than Shiva as her husband.
Parvati succeeded in the exam
Lord Shiva was extremely pleased to see this unwavering devotion and love of Mother Parvati. Only then did he leave the form of an ascetic and appear in his true form. After this Shiva accepted Mother Parvati as his better half.
Importance of Mahashivratri
According to mythological beliefs, the marriage of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati took place on the day of Mahashivratri. That is why it is considered very auspicious for those living a household life, as it is a symbol of love, dedication and faith. According to another legend, on this night Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Jyotirlinga to calm the dispute of superiority between Brahma and Vishnu. This form of Shiva is eternal and infinite. Therefore, Mahashivratri is considered the most auspicious and fruitful for the worship of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati.
