Maharashtra emerges as India’s top EV market in 2025. The state sold 30,596 electric cars, a 103% increase, taking its market share to 17%. It is also a leader in sales of electric 2-wheelers and commercial vehicles.

Last year, Maharashtra had the highest share in electric passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs and MPVs) sold across the country. According to Vahan Portal data (as of January 7, 2026), a total of 177,054 electric passenger vehicles are expected to be sold in India in 2025. This is an increase of 77 percent compared to last year. Of these, 30,596 units were sold in Maharashtra alone, which shows an annual growth of 103%. With this, Maharashtra’s market share increased to 17%, which was 15% in 2024.
Electric vehicles are being sold heavily in Maharashtra
The country’s financial capital Mumbai is making the biggest contribution to the growth of electric vehicles in Maharashtra, where the demand for electric cars and SUVs is increasing rapidly. Maharashtra has a strong hold not only in electric cars and SUVs but also in other electric vehicle segments. Electric two-wheeler (E-2W) sales reached 216,148 units, equivalent to 17% market share (1st place in the country).
Sales of electric commercial vehicles (E-CV) stood at 3,971 units, with a growth of 72% and a market share of 25% (1st in the country). At the same time, sales of electric three-wheeler (E-3W) stood at 15,792 units, but in this matter Maharashtra is at tenth position. Including all electric vehicle segments, Maharashtra is expected to sell a total of 266,524 electric vehicles in 2025. With this it became the second largest electric vehicle market in the country after Uttar Pradesh.
8 states dominate in purchasing electric passenger vehicles
States like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Delhi have a clear dominance in the sales of electric passenger vehicles. These eight states/UTs together sold 137,339 units, which is 77% of the total e-PV sales in the country. Interestingly, Tripura is the only state that saw a decline in electric car sales.
After Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu stood second, third and fourth respectively. At the same time, the rapid growth of Maharashtra has affected the market share of other states. Karnataka sold 20,977 units (48% growth, share decreased to 12%), Kerala sold 19,158 units (73% growth, share increased to 11%), and Tamil Nadu sold 15,185 units (95% growth, share increased to 9%).
These three companies sold the most electric cars in Maharashtra
Maharashtra has now become an important state for almost all electric car and SUV manufacturing companies. Tata Motors sold 10,493 units in Maharashtra, which is 15% of the company’s total electric vehicle sales. JSW MG sold 8,573 units, showing 124% YoY growth and 17% market share. Mahindra achieved sales of 6,511 units, registering a strong YoY growth of 540% and market share of 19%. The demand for BE 6 and XEV 9e played an important role in this. According to the data, these three companies together sold 25,577 electric cars and SUVs in Maharashtra.
