Maharashtra filled the most returns, but due to this Delhi became the real tax champion!

Delhi biggest share taxpayers India

In FY 2024-25, Delhi recorded the largest ratio in the country in terms of filing income tax returns. About 5.9% of the capital’s population filed returns. This part is more than the country’s average 3%. According to the data, more than 12.9 lakh people filed tax returns in Delhi. This information came to light when the government was asked questions about the income of middle class in the Lok Sabha.

Delhi became real tax champion

In the total count, Maharashtra is at the forefront. Here more than 46 lakh people filed income tax returns, which is the highest in the whole country. But according to the large population, the percentage of tax filing is not as high as Delhi. Himachal comes after Delhi, where 5.8% people filed returns. On the other hand, Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in the country, but only 1.5% people filled tax here. Bihar’s condition is even weaker – here this figure remained stuck at just 0.8%. If we look at the account of the whole country, only 2.4% of the people pay taxes in the total population. Their number sits around 340.8 lakhs.

From Jharkhand to Gujarat, big difference on income level

The picture of Jharkhand and Gujarat is special in the data of the Income Tax Department. There are 20% taxpayers in Jharkhand whose annual income is between 12 lakh and 50 lakh rupees. But in Gujarat, considered financially strong, this figure is only 7%. Moreover, Gujarat is not even in the list of 10 big states where tax filers earning 25 to 50 lakh rupees are the highest.

Maharashtra tops the taxpayers with 25 to 50 lakhs

Maharashtra is the top among those who declare income annually 25 lakh to 50 lakh rupees. Here about 1.37 lakh people filed returns in this category. This is followed by states like Karnataka (1.30 lakh), Tamil Nadu (78 thousand), Uttar Pradesh (70 thousand) and Telangana (60 thousand). This list includes West Bengal, Delhi, Haryana, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, but Gujarat could not make it to it.

This is the real picture of the middle class

Tax returns figures also show that a large part of the country is still in the lower income group. The highest 34% taxpayers earned the annual earnings between 2.5 to 5 lakh rupees. 26.7% tax filers are going to earn 5 to 7.5 lakh rupees. That is, the earnings of more than half of the middle class do not exceed 7.5 lakh rupees. At the same time, only 2.5% taxpayers who declare income more than Rs 25 lakh are taxpayers.
