Mahabharata War: Mahabharata is not just a war story, but a great book of struggle between religion, policy, dignity and duty. There are many such moments in this epic, when even Lord Krishna himself finds himself in a difficult dilemma. One such most emotional and furious moment was when Shri Krishna had to break his vow and pick up the wheel of the chariot and move forward to attack the enemy. This incident is not only the turning point of the Mahabharata war, but also shows that sometimes one has to rise above the rules to protect religion.

What was Shri Krishna’s promise?

Before the beginning of the Kurukshetra war, Lord Shri Krishna had taken a vow that he would not take up arms in this religious war. He will only act as Arjun’s charioteer and guide. On the other hand, the commander of the Kauravas was Bhishma Pitamah, in front of whose bravery the Pandava army was getting defeated.

Crisis on Bhishma Pitamah and Pandavas

Bhishma Pitamah had become the commander of the Kaurava side in the Kurukshetra war. His bravery, valor and fighting skills were unique. Every day he was causing huge damage to the Pandavas’ army on the battlefield. Even Arjun was not able to fight with full strength in front of Bhishma, because Bhishma was like his grandfather. Seeing this hesitation of Arjun, Shri Krishna’s heart became distraught.

When Pandavas started becoming weak

When Arjun repeatedly failed to stop Bhishma and the Pandavas’ army kept getting decimated, then Shri Krishna realized that if the situation continued like this then the destruction of the Dharma Paksha was certain. Lord Krishna’s anger manifested to protect religion. At that moment he realized that mere preaching is not enough, now action is necessary.

Krishna lifted the chariot wheel and entered the battlefield.

Suddenly that scene appeared on the battlefield which made Mahabharata immortal. Shri Krishna left his chariot, got down and picked up the wheel of the broken chariot and, filled with anger, ran towards Bhishma Pitamah. Seeing this scene the entire battlefield was stunned. Bhishma Pitamah himself considered that moment as the most sacred moment of his life.

Bhishma Pitamah’s feelings: Today my life is blessed

When Bhishma Pitamah saw that Lord Krishna was coming towards him with weapons raised, he put down his weapons. There was immense joy in his heart. Bhishma had said, today my life has become successful. If Shri Krishna himself is coming to kill me, then what could be a greater good fortune than this. This moment shows that Bhishma knew that Krishna was breaking the rules not for unrighteousness, but to protect dharma.

Arjun stopped Lord Krishna

When Arjun saw this scene, he became distraught. He immediately held the feet of Shri Krishna and prayed to him to desist from the war. Arjun said that he will now fight with his full strength and stop Bhishma. After this promise of Arjun, Shri Krishna calmed down and returned to the chariot. Therefore, this moment was considered the most different in Mahabharata.
