When she gave birth, what came out of her womb were not children, but pieces of flesh. Then this information was given to Rishi Vyas. Rishi Vyas reached Hastinapur. He divided the carcasses of meat into 101 parts in the palace. Then they were kept in ghee in separate earthen pots. Children developed from pieces of meat in these 101 pots. There were 100 sons and one daughter. These 100 sons were called Kauravas.
Why did Gandhari have 100 sons?
The name of the eldest son was Duryodhana, who later became an important character in the Mahabharata. There is also a description that in her previous birth, Gandhari had killed living beings. As a punishment for this, their children were born late. In another story, it is said that Gandhari had killed 100 tortoises in her previous birth.
