This boon was given to him by his father and Maharaja Shantanu of Hastinapur. Bhishma Pitamah was given a boon by his father and Maharaj Shantanu of Hastinapur that unless Bhishma himself wanted, he would not leave this world of death. In the war, Bhishma became a big challenge for the Pandavas. The war could not be won without defeating them.

In such a situation, Arjun put Shikhandi forward and showered his arrows on Grandfather Bhishma, due to which the grandfather was badly injured, but he did not immediately sacrifice his life. The first reason behind this is believed to be that the grandfather wanted to sacrifice his life when the Sun was Uttarayan. There is a belief in Hindu religion that the one who dies at this time attains salvation.

When the grandfather got injured, the sun was in Dakshinayan. In such a situation, Bhishma Pitamah waited a long time for 58 days for the Sun to pass Uttarayan. The second reason for Bhishma Pitamah not to sacrifice his life was his desire to see Hastinapur safe. Therefore, the grandfather did not sacrifice his life until the future of Hastinapur was secured.
