Story of Bhishma Pitamah
Story of Mahabharata: The war of Mahabharata took place in Dwapara Yuga. The war of Mahabharata lasted for 18 days. This war is considered to be the biggest and most horrific war in history. Bhishma Pitamah is said to be one of the main characters of Mahabharata. Bhishma Pitamah’s name was Devavrata, but after he took a solemn vow to remain celibate throughout his life and never marry, his name became Bhishma.
Grandfather Bhishma was the oldest warrior of the Mahabharata war, but even then he was very powerful. Grandfather Bhishma had the boon of voluntary death. This boon was given to him by his father and Maharaja Shantanu of Hastinapur. It was because of the boon of voluntary death that Bhishma Pitamah lay on the bed of arrows for many days and did not sacrifice his life. Let us know the reason behind this.
Bhishma Pitamah was a big challenge for the Pandavas.
Bhishma Pitamah was given a boon by his father and Maharaj Shantanu of Hastinapur that unless Bhishma himself wanted, he would not leave this world of death. Grandfather Bhishma was tied to the throne of Hastinapur and while performing his duties, he supported the Kauravas in the Mahabharata war. In the war, Bhishma became a big challenge for the Pandavas. The war could not be won without defeating them.
This was the reason for Bhishma Pitamah not giving up his life.
In such a situation, Arjun put Shikhandi forward and showered his arrows on Grandfather Bhishma, due to which the grandfather was badly injured, but he did not immediately sacrifice his life. The first reason behind this is believed to be that the grandfather wanted to sacrifice his life when the Sun was Uttarayan. There is a belief in Hindu religion that the one who dies at this time attains salvation.
When the grandfather got injured, the sun was in Dakshinayan. In such a situation, Bhishma Pitamah waited a long time for 58 days for the Sun to pass Uttarayan. The second reason for Bhishma Pitamah not to sacrifice his life was his desire to see Hastinapur safe. Therefore, the grandfather did not sacrifice his life until the future of Hastinapur was secured.
