Mexico earthquake today: A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck near the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico, in the early hours of Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake hit at 02:21:02 UTC, with its epicenter located at 15.02°N latitude and 94.14°W longitude, at a depth of 10 kilometers. This follows another major earthquake in the area two days ago.
On Saturday, a 5.9 magnitude quake hit off Guatemala’s southwest coast, some 100 kilometers south-southwest of Champerico, at a depth of 9 kilometers. The quake was felt in Guatemala City and southern Mexico. Earlier the same day, a magnitude 5.7 quake was recorded off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ). Local officials in both Mexico and Guatemala reported no immediate fatalities or serious damage to major infrastructure from any of the recent earthquakes. Nevertheless, residents of affected communities took to social media to post videos and reports of ground shaking.
Earthquake-Prone Zone
Mexico and Guatemala are situated on the seismically active edge of the North American, Cocos, and Caribbean tectonic plates and are thus at risk of recurring earthquakes. Specialists caution that the concentration of quakes in such a short period is a reminder of the seismic hazard vulnerability of the area.
