Actor Madhuri Dixit has expressed support for performer Gautami Patil after she spoke about the backlash over her controversial dance moves and the apology she issued following the incident.
In an upcoming episode of the Marathi game show ‘Kon Honar Crorepati’, Gautami will appear alongside Shiv Thakare and discuss the controversy, the online criticism she faced and the changes she made to her performances afterwards.
Recalling the incident, Gautami said she was performing at an event when a video of her dance began circulating on social media and news platforms. She said she learnt about the controversy only while returning home after the show and immediately acknowledged her mistake and apologised to the people of Maharashtra.
“I immediately issued a statement, acknowledged my mistake and apologised to the people of Maharashtra. What happened was unintentional, but I took responsibility for it. I worked on myself after that and made sure I did not repeat the mistake,” she said.
Gautami also expressed concern that older videos continued to shape public perception of her despite changes in her performances. She urged people to watch her current shows before judging her based on past footage.
“If you still believe I am making those mistakes, come and watch one of my shows. If you find something wrong, then speak up. All I ask is that you see my work today before judging me,” she said.
The performer also spoke about a change in her audience, saying women now make up a larger share of the crowds attending her shows, which previously attracted mainly male spectators.
Responding to Gautami’s account, Madhuri said, “Once you have acknowledged your mistake and taken steps to correct it, what more is there to say? There is nothing left to hold against you.”
The controversy dates back to 2022, when some of Gautami’s performances drew criticism over dance movements and gestures that viewers considered suggestive. Certain aspects of her stage presentation, including pouring water over herself during a performance, also attracted objections.
Despite issuing an apology, Gautami said the continued circulation of older videos has made it difficult for audiences to recognise the changes she has made since the controversy.
