New Delhi: Jofra Archer picked up a wicket on his Test comeback after four years as the visitors post 44/1 at tea on Day of the ongoing 3rd Test against India at Lord’s in London on Friday, July 11. He removed Yashasvi Jaiswal on 13 runs in the second over of the innings, but Karun Nair and KL Rahul stood firm to ensure that the Men in Blue didn’t lose any more wickets in the second session.
Archer, who last played for England in 2021, made a stellar comeback by dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal. He bowled a seam-up delivery on and around the off stump, and the Indian opener looked to play it to the leg side, but got a leading edge, and the ball went straight into the hands of Harry Brook at second slip. After his dismissal, Nair and Rahul forged an unbeaten 29-run partnership for the second wicket at tea.
Jasprit Bumrah surpasses Kapil Dev’s record
Jasprit Bumrah broke legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev’s record for most five-wicket hauls away from home by an Indian player. He became the 15th Indian bowler to register his name on the Lord’s honours board and also took his 15th Test fifer on Day 2 of the third Test against England. This was also his 13th five-wicket haul away from home, as he surpassed Kapil Dev in the list.
Earlier in the day, Bumrah took four wickets on Day 2 as the hosts bowled out for 387. Three Lions started the day with Joe Root completing his 37th Test century on the first ball, and it looked like the visitors would have a long day on the field. But, Bumrah dismissed Stokes on 44. He bowled a good length outside off delivery, and it nipped back in through the defences of Stokes and hit into the top of off stump.
He took his third wicket of the match by dismissing Root on 104. Bumrah bowled another good-length delivery, and Root came forward to push the ball into the gap, but it jagged in and got the inside edge and crashed into the middle stump. He removed Chris Woakes on the very next delivery, who tried to push the ball but got an outside edge of the bat.
Brydon Carse and Jamie Smith forged an 84-run partnership for the eighth wicket and helped the hosts to recover. Both batters completed their fifties as England went past the 350-run mark in the first innings. Siraj removed both Smith and Carse while Bumrah dismissed Archer to complete his five-wicket haul.
