Chastity and power of penance

Lord Parshuram’s mother’s name was Renuka. His father was Maharishi Jamdagni. Both were extreme ascetics. Mother Renuka used to use raw clay pots, not those baked in fire, to fetch water from the river. It is said that due to his chastity and power of penance, the raw clay pot did not melt in water. One morning Mother Renuka went to the river bank.

At that time, Gandharva king Chitrarath was roaming there with his nymphs, seeing which Mata Renuka’s mind got disturbed for a moment. Just because of this one moment of mental distraction, his achievements were taken away from him. That day the raw pot started melting in water and was not ready. After this, when she reached the ashram empty handed, Maharishi Jamdagni saw everything with his divine vision. Then he got very angry.

Sons ordered to kill mother

Maharishi considered this a violation of decorum and ordered his sons to kill the mother. One by one, the hands of Parashuram’s four elder brothers started trembling before doing this. Everyone refused to raise weapons against their mother. Seeing his disobedience, his father cursed him to turn into a stone. At last Lord Parashuram raised his terrible ax after hearing his father’s order.

Lord Parshuram asked for mother’s life

After this God cut off the head of his own mother. Seeing this the entire ashram was stunned, but Parashuram knew that his father had the power to defeat even death. Maharishi’s anger subsided after seeing his son’s unwavering devotion to his father. He asked him to ask for a boon from his son. On this, Lord Parashuram very cleverly said that he needs life for my mother. My brothers need consciousness and my mother should not remember that I beheaded her. Then the sage sprinkled the blessed water and Mother Renuka came alive.
