Shaligram is considered to be the form of Lord Vishnu. Shaligram meets the Kali Gandaki river originating from Nepal. Where Shali Gram is worshiped considering it to be the form of Shri Hari. This one person started the task of weighing meat, even after this God did not get angry with him and being pleased with his calm spirit, he decided to stay with the butcher forever.
Story of Lord Jagannath and his devotee
According to folk tales, a butcher named Sadan lives in a village. Being born in a butcher family, he had only one job to do all day long: selling meat and weighing meat. Once he was going somewhere, where he found a round stone, seeing it the butcher thought that it could be used for weighing. Thinking this, he brought that stone to the shop, but he was unaware that the round stone was Shaligram i.e. Lord Vishnu. He weighs the meat while singing kirtan and tears keep flowing from his eyes.
Sadhu’s eyes fell on Shaligram
One day a saint, Mahatma, was passing by a butcher’s shop with a cloth over his mouth. He saw that the butcher was weighing the meat with Shaligram. Seeing this he said, hey, what are you doing? It is a big sin to not find you, this is actually Shaligram. After listening to the monk, Sadan ji said that Maharaj, I made a mistake, I did not know about it at all.
Lord let’s go to the temple
The Mahatma said, bring it, give it to me. After taking the Shaligram, the Mahatma bathed with pure river water and Panchamrit.
Applied perfume and sandalwood. Patharkar garlanded the silver throne. Kirtan of Thakur ji was done, kheer was made and offered. The Mahatma cried a lot in front of Lord Shaligram and said, Nath, you also said that you were sitting at a butcher’s place. Now you, Thakur ji, sat here with this love.

God appeared in the sadhu’s dream at night and said, ‘Listen, leave me at the butcher’s house as soon as the morning comes. On this the sage said that God sells that meat and uses you as a load. Then the Lord said that you do as I say and leave me there in the morning. The monk again said, Lord, what happiness are you getting there? That place is not pure, not holy, that place is not good, the person selling meat is a great sinner. Why do you have to go there?
Thakur ji said, at some places we find happiness in taking bath, at some places we find happiness in sitting on the throne, at some places we find happiness in eating food. We find pleasure in rolling at Sadan Butcher’s place. When he weighs on the scale, we roll here and there, we enjoy it a lot. You leave me there and come to him. When the butcher sings a kirtan with tears in his eyes while weighing the meat, we get a lot of happiness in that, hence you leave me to him.
Mr Hari came back to the butcher
As soon as he woke up in the morning, Mahatma Sadan returned to the butcher and started giving him back the Shaligram. Seeing this, Sadna butcher said, why did you bring him here? I sell meat here, this is a very dirty place. This Mahatma said, keep him with you. Thakur ji came in a dream at night and said this. They have to stay with you only. On hearing this, Sadan Butcher ji’s hands and legs started trembling and tears started flowing from his eyes.
Seeing God’s great love and concern for himself, Sadan Butcher sold his shop and after stopping all work, he started living his whole life only for Thakur ji. You were yearning to meet me, now I will yearn to meet you, I will come to meet you and set out towards Sadan Butcher Jagannathpuri. Asked the people to tell him about Puri. People told him the direction and then left. Sadan went towards Puri.
