There was looting of fish on the highway after a pickup full of fish overturned on the Kannauj-Kanpur highway in Kanpur. The villagers ran to collect the fish with buckets and polythene. The police arrived and stopped the robbery and started investigation.
A strange and unbelievable scene was seen in Chaubepur police station area of Kanpur late on Sunday night. A Tata pickup laden with fish overturned near Manghana Chaubepur on the Kannauj-Kanpur highway, and within no time there was ‘fish looting’ on the road. People from nearby villages ran with buckets and polythene and whoever caught the fish took it with him.
Pickup laden with fish suddenly overturns
According to the information, the accident happened around 4 pm on Sunday night, when a Tata pickup vehicle loaded with fish suddenly lost control and collided with the divider. The collision was so strong that the vehicle overturned and fish worth lakhs of rupees kept in thermocol boxes scattered on the road. The driver and cleaner remained at the spot for some time, but seeing the crowd, ran away from there.

Villagers’ ‘loot fair’ like competition, driver stopped and villagers chased him
As soon as the news of the incident reached the nearby villages, people started collecting fish with buckets, cans and polythene. Someone described it as a ‘cat’s luck’. There was a competition to collect fish on the road till morning. Many villagers said that they had never seen such an incident before – as if a fish market had been set up on the highway.
According to eyewitnesses, when the driver stopped the villagers from picking up the fish, some people surrounded him and he got into a fight. He was forced to run away from there. During this time, some people also made a video of the entire incident, which is now going viral on social media.

Police stopped robbery of fishes, businessman had consignment worth lakhs
On receiving information, Chaubepur police station reached the spot and stopped the process of collecting fish by the villagers. According to the police, in the accident, more than half of the fish loaded on the pickup were taken away by the villagers, while the remaining fish died on the spot. At present, no complaint has been given by the fish trader or the driver. According to the information, these fish belonged to a big businessman of Kannauj, which were sent to Kanpur fish market for supply. Police are investigating the matter and trying to get in touch with the businessman.
