Longest Indian movies: When Aditya Dhar’s spy thriller Dhurandhar stormed cinemas on December 5, it did more than dominate the box office. The film shattered records, crossed Rs 1200 crore worldwide without any dubbed versions, and redefined the scale of Hindi action dramas. Now, with Dhurandhar 2 gearing up for release on March 19, 2026, its runtime is making almost as many headlines as its box office clash with Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups.
Reportedly locked at approximately 235 minutes (3 hours and 55 minutes), Dhurandhar 2 is being hailed as the longest Indian film of the 21st century. It overtakes Lagaan, which ran for 3 hours and 44 minutes and was once considered unusually lengthy for mainstream cinema.
Interestingly, Dhurandhar was originally conceived as a standalone project. However, insiders reveal that the total footage ran beyond seven hours. Instead of trimming key sequences, the makers chose to split the film into two parts.
Longest Indian films ever made
While Dhurandhar 2 ranks among the longest theatrical releases of recent times, the all-time record belongs to Tamas, directed by Govind Nihalani. Originally produced as a Doordarshan television miniseries and later screened at film festivals as a feature, Tamas runs for over 320 minutes (more than 5 hours and 20 minutes). Based on Bhisham Sahni’s novel, it explores the horrors of Partition.
Another marathon film is LOC Kargil, helmed by J.P. Dutta. The war epic clocks 255 minutes (4 hours 15 minutes) and portrays the 1999 Kargil conflict with an ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn.
Mera Naam Joker, directed by Raj Kapoor, runs over 4 hours and later achieved cult status despite an underwhelming initial run. Meanwhile, Gangs of Wasseypur by Anurag Kashyap stretches to 319 minutes in total, though it was released in two parts.
