Lok Sabha passes AP Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, giving statutory backing for Amaravati

Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was cleared in Lok Sabha with a voice vote, officially giving statutory backing to Amaravati as the permanent capital of AP.

MPs from various parties including TDP, BJP, Jana Sena, NCP, Congress and Samajwadi Party took part in the discussion and supported the bill. It will be sent to Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Speaking in Lok Sabha, BJP MP Daggubati Purandeshwari said, “Andhra Pradesh began its journey as a state without a capital. The capital Amaravati was born out of the anger of bifurcation.

When the YCP government came, the future of Amaravati became dark, she said. She noted that Amaravati will be the permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh

Union Minister and TDP MP Pemmasani Chandrasekhar said that Amaravati is the dream capital of people of Andhra Pradesh.

Responding to the passing of the bill in Lok Sabha, AP Minister Nara Lokesh said, “It is a matter of immense joy that the country’s Parliament has become the platform for this historic day, when five crore Andhras proudly proclaim: My state is Andhra Pradesh—my capital is Amaravati.

Introducing and approving the Amaravati Bill in Parliament, which provides legal backing to the unanimous resolution passed by the Andhra Pradesh Assembly to designate Amaravati as the capital under the development decentralization policy with the clarion call of One State—One Capital, is a proud moment for millions of people.”
