Lohri is a very special festival for Punjabis. In the evening, people gather together and light a fire and offer things like Revdi and maize. Along with this, people enthusiastically perform Bhangra and Gidda and also sing traditional songs. During this time there is a complete party atmosphere. If it is a festival then how can food be forgotten? The people of Punjab are known for their hospitality and delicious food. The festival of Lohri is being celebrated today i.e. 13th January. On this special occasion, you can serve sesame kheer to the guests.

Sesame is a great food for health in winter, which along with keeping your body warm, provides many nutrients including protein. You must have eaten a lot of sesame laddus, but once you should also try its creamy rich flavored kheer. If you want to make kheer for four to five people, then you need 1 liter milk, half cup sugar, 1 cup sesame seeds, 10-12 almonds, 10-12 cashews, 1 teaspoon green cardamom powder, 2 to 2 teaspoons grated coconut and 1 teaspoon desi ghee. Apart from this, you can add dry fruits as per your wish like Magaj seeds, Pistachios, Raisins, Chironji. Now see the recipe.

How to make sesame kheer?

  • Clean the sesame seeds so that no pebbles remain. After this, roast it in a pan on low flame till it turns golden.
  • While roasting sesame seeds, you have to keep stirring them continuously with a ladle, otherwise they burn very quickly. When the sesame seeds start giving off a nice aroma, take them out in a plate.
  • Put the milk to boil in a big pan with a thick bottom and put all the sesame seeds in a mortar and grind them coarsely.
  • Grinding sesame seeds further enhances its taste and also gives a good texture to the kheer.

  • Cut the nuts you have taken like almonds, pistachios and cashews into small pieces or crush them lightly.
  • When the milk boils, add crushed sesame seeds to it and also add grated coconut.
  • Let the sesame seeds cook in milk for some time and when it starts getting a thick texture, add sugar to it and let it cook.
  • Roast chopped almonds, pistachios and whatever dry fruits you have taken in one spoon of desi ghee and then add them to the kheer. Along with this also add cardamom powder.
