Liverpool agree Guehi deal with Crystal Palace as Reds’ summer spending set to cross £450 million

New Delhi: Liverpool are on the brink of signing their eighth player of a prolific summer transfer window after agreeing a deal to sign English centre-back Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

The 25-year-old, who has been one of the key targets for Liverpool all summer, is set to complete the formalities of his move, including a medical, in London on Monday before inking a long-term deal with the Premier League champions on deadline day.

Both teams agreed to the deal after reaching a compromise on the fee for Guehi, with Palace accepting Liverpool’s original offer of £35m, plus a 10 per cent sell-on clause.

The English defender is set to become Liverpool’s second major signing on transfer deadline day, after the 20-time champions agreed a £125m deal with Newcastle for Swedish forward Alexander Isak.

Guehi wore the captain’s armband in Palace’s 3-0 win at Aston Villa on Sunday night. He marked his 162nd appearance, which will be his last for the London club, with a sensational second goal.

Guehi’s signing strengthens Liverpool’s backline after Jarrell Quansah left Anfield for Bayer Leverkusen.

It also takes their summer spending to £455m, which would smash the record for a single club spend in a single window, previously held by Chelsea in the summer of 2023 (£400m).

Triple delight for Villa as Jackson set to leave Stamford Bridge

Meanwhile, Aston Villa, who have endured a rocky start to the season, are set to complete a trioka of deals, including two loan moves on deadline day.  The Clarets and Blues have signed former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof on a two-year contract and are on the brink of completing loan deals for Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott and Man United outcast Jadon Sancho. 31-year-old Lindelof was a free agent after the Sweden captain’s United contract had expired at the end of last season.

Elsewhere in London, Chelsea have finally agreed on an improved package for striker Nicolas Jackson to join Bayern Munich on an initial loan move for £14.3m (16.5m euros), which includes a mandatory obligation to buy. The Blues have filled the gap by signing Argentine Facundo Buonanotte, 20, on a season-long loan deal from Brighton for a £2m fee.

Another London club, Tottenham Hotspur, have also struck a crucial deal on deadline day, agreeing a move for Paris St-Germain striker Randal Kolo Muani. The 26-year-old has agreed personal terms with Thomas Frank’s side. The Frenchman spent the second half of last season on loan at Juventus, scoring eight goals in 16 Serie A games.
