The Ministry of Home Affairs has canceled the funding license of Sonam Wangchuk’s NGO. The NGO has been accused of violation of the Foreign Contribution Act. Sonam Wangchuk has been accused of provoking people for violence in Leh.

Sonam wangchukuk: Violence took place in Leh on Wednesday during a protest demanding state status to Ladakh. This caused 6 people to die and more than 70 were injured. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was accused of provoking people.

Sonam Wangchuk’s NGO funding license to cancel home ministry

Now the government has taken strict action against Sonam Wangchuk. The Ministry of Home Affairs has canceled the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act of Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh established by Wangchuk. The Ministry of Home Affairs has stated that Wangchuk’s NGO has violated the law.

The association was registered under FCRA with a registration certificate to get foreign contribution to cultural and educational programs. He was given a show cause notice on 20 August 2025. The reminder was sent on 10 September. Wangchuk’s NGO was asked why his license should not be canceled. NGO replied on 19 September.

  • Irregular deposits: During FY 2021-22, Sonam Wangchuk deposited Rs 3.5 lakh in the FCRA account of the association. Regarding this, the Ministry said that this is a violation of Section 17 of the Act.
  • The NGO said that this was the amount received from the sale of the old bus purchased from the FCRA fund. The Ministry found the reply “not valid”. Referred to having disturbances in the filing and not having a related credit entry.

  • Local Fund in FCRA account: In FY 2020-21, a local fund of Rs 54,600 was deposited in FCRA account from three people. It was considered the fault of the NGO volunteers. The Ministry described it as a violation of Section 17.
