The reasons for the blast that took place 25 km from Panaji, the capital of Goa, are being investigated.
Goa Nightclub Fire: At least 25 people lost their lives in a fire caused by a cylinder blast in a night club in Arpora village of North Goa. Most of the victims were night club staff. The reasons for the blast that took place 25 km from Panaji, the capital of Goa, are being investigated. There is also talk of action being taken against the owner of the night club. With this in mind, let us try to find out whether and when a cylinder can explode due to leakage?
There are two main reasons for blast in LPG cylinder or any other gas cylinder. The first reason is gas leaking from the cylinder and the second reason is expiry of the cylinder. Whenever gas leaks from a cylinder, it does not explode immediately. It usually takes 5-10 minutes for it to burst.
In fact, when gas leaks from the cylinder, even a small spark can cause fire. This fire slowly reaches the cylinder. On the other hand, due to leakage, the gas in the cylinder decreases, due to which the gas pressure also decreases. Due to this, fire enters the cylinder and it bursts.
Apart from this, the cylinder in which the gas is filled under pressure is usually made of metal like steel etc. When gas leaks, fire spreads all around it. Due to this fire it becomes hot. Due to this, the volume of gas inside the cylinder starts increasing gradually. As the volume of gas increases, the pressure on the walls of the cylinder increases. In such a situation, the gas inside tries to come out by tearing the cylinder, the pressure of which causes a blast.
25 people died due to cylinder blast in a nightclub.
Expired cylinder also cause blast
One of the reasons for blast in cylinder is its expiry. Yes, the time for using the cylinder is also fixed. Generally the period of use of any cylinder is 10 years. That is why codes like A-23, B-23 are written on the strip below the handle of the cylinder. The expiry date of the cylinder is known from this code. In this, alphabet A means January to March, B means April to June, C means July to September and D means October to December. The last year of use of the cylinder is written next to this alphabet.
That means, if a gas cylinder comes to your house and A-25 is written on it, it means that it is safe and legal for use only till March 2025. If B-25 is registered, the cylinder is valid for use till June, if C-25 is registered till September and if D-25 is written, then the cylinder is valid for use till December-2025. Use of the cylinder becomes dangerous after these given dates. The reason for this is the weakening of the metal of the cylinder. After a certain period, the metal of the cylinder becomes weak and due to the pressure of the gas it may explode.
The fire broke out in the nightclub around 11-12 o’clock in the night.
Wrong maintenance is also the reason
There is a correct way to store the cylinder. The cylinder should always be kept in vertical position in the kitchen or any other place. Due to this, the pressure of the gas filled in the cylinder is equal at every place in the entire cylinder. By keeping the cylinder horizontal i.e. lying on the ground, the gas pressure in the cylinder may be higher in one direction. Due to this heavy pressure the metal of the cylinder may explode.
Pressure may be affected due to valve problems
There can also be a blast due to a problem in the valve of the cylinder. In fact, a valve is fitted in the cylinder to allow the gas to be released slowly. Due to any deficiency in this, the gas comes out rapidly and sometimes in the attempt to come out, the pressure of the gas becomes so high that it becomes the cause of blast. If the regulator or pipes installed in the cylinder are substandard, then this can also promote blast. Due to these, gas may leak or pressure may be affected.
Be alert from excessive heat or damaged cylinder
Excessive heat applied to the cylinder from outside can also cause a blast in the same way as fire occurs due to leakage due to increase in gas pressure due to heat. Actually, due to keeping the cylinder in the sun or near fire or in a very hot place, the gas inside expands due to heat and the pressure of the gas from inside increases on the metal of the cylinder. Due to this it may burst. Similarly, if there is a dent or crack at any place in the cylinder, then there is a possibility of increase in gas pressure or leakage at that place. Due to this also the cylinder may explode.
