Kurnool Bus Accident Updates: At least 20 people were burnt to death when a private sleeper bus going from Hyderabad to Bengaluru caught fire. The fire broke out after a fallen motorcycle collided with a bus on National Highway 44 (NH-44) near Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh early Friday morning. The bike rider also died in this accident. This was not an accident, it was a preventable massacre.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar has strongly condemned drunk driving, calling it a “terrorist” act. He said, “Drunk drivers are terrorists and their actions are no less than an act of terrorism on our roads. The Kurnool bus accident, in which 20 innocent people lost their lives, was not an accident in the true sense of the word. It was a preventable carnage that happened due to the carelessness and irresponsible behavior of a drunk bike rider.

There will be no leniency for drunk drivers
VC Sajjanar further said, “I stand by my statement that drunk drivers are terrorists in every sense of the word. They destroy many lives, families and futures. Such acts will never be tolerated.” Reiterating his department’s stand on road safety, Sajjanar said Hyderabad Police will show no mercy to anyone found driving under the influence. Anyone caught driving under the influence will face the full force of the law. There will be no leniency, no exceptions and no mercy for those who risk the lives of innocent people. It’s time we, as a society, stopped calling drunk driving a mistake. This is a crime that destroys lives and deserves appropriate punishment.”
Bus caught fire due to petrol spread from bike
According to police, the bus, operated by Vemuri Kaveri Travels, was going from Hyderabad to Bengaluru. Meanwhile, a biker named Panchala Shiva Shankar, 20, of Lakshmipuram village and his friend Eriswami were returning to Tuggali at 2 am after filling petrol worth ₹300 in their Pulsar motorcycle from a nearby petrol pump. It can be clearly seen in the CCTV footage installed at the pump that Shiv Shankar was under the influence of alcohol. Shortly after leaving the petrol pump, the biker lost control and crashed into the road divider. At about 2.39 pm, the bike lying on the road collided, causing sparks and petrol spread from the bike to catch fire.
