Kraigg Brathwaite Creates History; Becomes First Player In The World With Unique Feat That Will Never Happen Again

West Indies cricket veteran Kraigg Brathwaite created history after taking the field in the second Test of the ongoing three-match Test series against Australia at the Grenada National Stadium, which started on Thursday (July 2).

The second match of the Frank Worwell trophy marked the 100th of Brathwaite’s career, who until earlier this year was leading the Windies in the longest format of the game.

The right-handed opening batter made his Test debut in 2011 against Pakistan. He led the West Indies in 39 Test matches, which is the 4th most for any player in history. Brathwaite is the 10th West Indies player to reach the elite milestone of 100 Test matches and the 82nd overall.

Kraigg Brathwaite’s Rare Feat

Since the introduction of T20 cricket, Brathwaite has become the first player to play 100 Test matches without playing the shortest format of the game. The 32-year-old has not just not played a T20I for West Indies but also never played the 20-over format in domestic cricket or played any franchise league.

A total of 32 players have completed 100 Test matches after the first T20 game was played in 2003. Cheteshwar Pujara is the only other player in the elite list of legends to reach the huge milestone without ever playing a T20I for their country.

Pujara also has played the least amount of ODIs (5) among the elite list of players with Brathwaite a close second (10).

Kraigg Brathwaite’s Unwanted feat

Among specialist batters (players to play in the top 6), Brathwaite has the worst batting average among players to play 100 Tests. He is the only top-six batter in the legendary group of players with a batting average below 35. Among the 82 players to play 100 Tests, 58 have batted in the top six. Only 12 of them have played 100 games as opener, and Brathwaite is just one of two of them to average below 30 alongside Michael Atherton.

Lowest Batting Average Among Players To Play 100 Tests (Top Six batters)

Player Country Matches Played Batting Average
Kragg Brathwaite West Indies 100 32.83
Ben Stokes England 105 36.11
Carl Hooper West Indies 101 36.99
Micheal Atherton England 115 37.71
Alex Stewart England 128 38.76

Among the top six batters, Brathwaite’s tally of 12 centuries is also the lowest in the 100 Test club, with only ex-New Zealand captain Stephan Fleming scoring fewer tons (7).
