Kottayam: A day after the collapse of a portion of the Medical college building, the Director of Medical Education (DME) has revealed to a section of media houses in Kerala that the initial reports concerning the poor condition of the building that collapsed on July 3 morning was submitted during 2012-2013.
“The report found that retrofitting cannot be done and the building will have to be demolished in the future,” said DME in-charge Dr KV Vishwanathan.
However, he added that there were no suggestions regarding demolition.
DME in-charge Dr Vishwanathan K V said that the report did not provide a clear picture regarding the lifespan of the building.
According to the DME in-charge, studies were done by the Public Works Department (PWD), special teams from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology.
The revelation has put the onus on the various departments under the government such as the Local Self government and the health department. Meanwhile, neither the health minister nor the Chief minister has reacted to the statement made by the DME in-charge.
Bindu (52), a native of Thalayolaparambu, died after being trapped under the rubble of a 68-year-old building that collapsed on Thursday morning. She had come to the hospital as a bystander for her daughter, who was undergoing treatment at the trauma care unit. Her funeral will be held at her residence on Friday at 11 am.
State government to handover Rs 50,000 to the family of Bindu
Amid opposition protests over the death of a woman in the collapse of a building at Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital, the government has decided to hand over ₹50,000 to the family of the deceased. Minister for Ports and Ettumanoor MLA VN Vasavan announced the emergency aid on Friday.
On Friday various opposition parties including the Congress and the BJP held protests across the state demanding the resignation of health minister Veena George.
Protests turned violent in Thiruvananthapuram where the BJP leaders marched towards the residence of Veena George and was stopped by the police.
