Kolkata rainfall: Kolkata received 178.6 mm of rainfall between 1 September and 22 September. This is 16 percent less than the normal 213.7 mm rainfall during this period. On September 22, between 8.30 am to 23 September, between 8.30 am, it received 247.4 mm of rain. Most of the rain was in a few hours of the night.
Due to heavy rains, a flood -like situation arose in Kolkata. This disaster has caused huge destruction before Durga Puja. Kolkata has received more than 22 days of this month in a few hours. Many areas have been flooded due to torrential rains and traffic, trains and metro services have come to a standstill.
Seven people have died in rain -related incidents. Some of them died due to electric shock. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim appealed to people to stay inside their homes. The mayor said that if it does not rain again, it will take at least 12 hours to restore normal conditions in the city.
Why was there so much rain in Kolkata?
According to the Meteorological Department, a low pressure area was formed in the northeast of the Bay of Bengal. Due to this, the Ganges coastal areas of West Bengal including Kolkata, Hooghly and Howrah have received heavy rains. This low pressure area can remain in this area for the next 24 hours. Due to this, there may be more rainfall in Kolkata.
Heavy rains in Kolkata 6 hours, houses submerged in flood
It started raining after midnight in most areas of Kolkata and its suburbs. Due to heavy rains between 12 am and 6 am, roads and houses were submerged in water and flood -like situation arose in the city. According to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the most affected areas of rain include Balliganj (295 mm), Gariahat (262 mm), Jadavpur (258 mm), Alipur (240 mm) and Mukundpur (280 mm).

2663% more rainfall in Kolkata
According to the Meteorological Department (IMD) data, Kolkata received 2,663% more rainfall than the city’s long -term average rainfall in 24 hours till 8.30 am. Havada was in second place. Here, the long -term average received 1,006 percent more rainfall. North 24 Parganas received 857 percent more rainfall than average. These figures indicate how heavy rainfall in the city has received in such a short time.
