Kodungallur Bagavathi Temple: Many ancient and mysterious temples of Gods and Goddesses in South India Are located. One of these is Kodungallur Bhagavathi Devi Temple. This temple is located in Thrissur district of Kerala state. This temple is famous for its amazing and mysterious features. Here the goddess is seated with the demon’s mace in her hand. It is said that she is the form of Goddess Kali. The height of the temple is 32.53 meters (107 feet).

Kodungallur Bhagwati Devi Temple is included among the famous temples of Kerala. This temple is also known as Sri Kurumba Bhagwati Temple. Devotees coming here call Bhagwati Devi as Kurumba or Kodungallur Amma. Bhagwati Devi is worshiped in this temple. Bhagwati Devi is seen as a powerful goddess with eight arms.

Only the priests offer flowers to the goddess in the temple.

Worship is done in this temple every day from 3 pm to 10 pm. It is believed that earlier Lord Shiva was worshiped in this temple. Then Parashuram had installed the idol of Maa Kali near the temple. Kodungallur city was once the capital of the Chera Empire. The five ‘Shri Chakras’ located in the temple were installed by Shankaracharya, which are considered to be a symbol of the power of the Goddess. Only the priests offer flowers to the Goddess in the temple.

Bharani festival takes place in the temple

Earlier, birds and goats were sacrificed in this temple, but after the order of Kerala Government, a complete ban was imposed on animal sacrifice in the temple. Now a red dhoti is offered to the goddess in the temple. Bharani festival is celebrated in the temple. This is one of the major festivals of Kerala. It is celebrated every year between March and April.

The festival mainly begins with a ritual called Kozhikalku Moodle, in which cocks are sacrificed. This temple is located about 21 kilometers from Nedumbassery International Airport, Irinjalakuda Railway Station and Kodungallur Bus Stand.
