He became the first Vice President and then the second President of the country.   • Dr. Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888 in a normal middle class family in Tiruttani, Tamil Nadu.
  • He was a smart student since childhood and studied Philosophy from Christian College, Madras.
  • He taught in many big universities in which- to Mysore University, Calcutta University, Andhra University, Delhi University and Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
  • He was the first Indian to get a chance to become a professor at Oxford University. Here he taught Eastern Religion and Ethics (till 1936–1952).
  • In 1930, he was called to lectures on Comprehensive Region at the University of Chicago.
  • In 1948, he led the Indian delegation in UNESCO and also became the chairman of its executive board.
  • In 1952 he became the first Vice President of India and the second President in 1962.
  • In 1954, he received India’s highest civilian honor Bharat Ratna.
  • He was nominated for the Nobel Prize 27 times- out of which 16 times for literature and 11 times for peace.
  • His famous books include Indian Philosophy (1923–27), The Philosophy of the Upanishads (1924), N Idealist View of Life (1932), Eastern Religirs and Western Thoughts (1939) and East and West: Sam reflexes (1955).
