Buying new clothes in Kharmas: According to the Panchang, when the Sun enters Sagittarius, that entire one month period is called Kharmas or Malmas. In the year 2025, Kharmas will start from 16 December 2025 (Tuesday) and will continue till 15 January 2026. This will end as soon as the Sun enters Capricorn. According to astrology, Sun is considered the lord of all the planets, the factor of soul and energy.

When the Sun enters Jupiter’s (Guru’s) zodiac sign Sagittarius, its energy becomes slow like a ‘Khar’ (donkey). This is considered to be the ‘weak’ time of the Jupiter-Sun conjunction. For this reason, auspicious activities like marriage, tonsure, house warming, and starting of new business etc. are considered prohibited during this entire month. But can other things be purchased during this period?

Auspicious work: In astrology, auspicious activities are considered to be those which are directly related to major rituals, goals of life or the beginning of a new life (like marriage or house warming).

Clothing Purchase: Buying new clothes or any other item is a routine purchase, not a religious rite or auspicious act. This is part of normal lifestyle. Therefore, there is no direct restriction of Kharmas on buying new clothes.

Auspiciousness of buying new clothes in Kharmas

General Shopping: Buying new clothes, buying items of daily use or buying any small household item does not come under the definition of auspicious work. Therefore you can make this purchase without any hesitation.

Planetary influence: Kharmas does not have a negative impact on the position of any planet (like Venus or Mercury) associated with buying new clothes, especially when you intend to wear them.

Good feeling: If you are buying a garment for a religious journey or festival (which can be done in Kharmas), it is considered even more auspicious.

Although buying new clothes is auspicious, but if you are making any very big, expensive, or investment related purchase (like gold worth lakhs, vehicle or house) and if you can postpone it for a few days, then it may be more fruitful to do it after Makar Sankranti. But buying clothes does not fall in this category. Therefore, in Kharmas, you should avoid only those big rituals which bring any permanent and big change in your life.
