Kollam: After reports of the death of a 32-year-old woman from Kollam and her 1-year-old daughter in Sharjah surfaced due to dowry harassment from her in-laws, the mother of the deceased woman has intervened and due to which the Indian Consulate has decided to halt the child’s funeral being conducted by the father’s family.
Vipanchika and her 1-year-old daughter was found dead on July 8 at their apartment when her husband Nidheesh broke open the door while initially there was no response.
The shocking ordeal of the entire harassment, both mental and physical had been revealed in the suicide note and a Facebook post by Vipanchika.
According to a complaint lodged by Vipanjika’s mother, Shyamala, with Kundara police, her daughter was regularly harassed over dowry, humiliated for her appearance, and isolated by her husband and his family. Shyamala has raised serious allegations against Vipanjika’s husband, Nitheesh, and his parents.
Shyamala alleged that her granddaughter, Vybhavi, who was just one year old, was physically harmed after Vipanjika confronted Nitheesh about his alleged extramarital relationships. A legal notice for divorce was later sent to Vipanjika. According to Shyamala, her daughter ended her life and that of her baby after receiving the divorce notice. In her complaint, Shyamala accused Nitheesh, his sister Neethu Beni, and their father of abetment to suicide.
According to reports, Nitheesh has been summoned to the Indian Consulate for discussions regarding the child’s funeral. It is also reported that Shyamala will return from Sharjah by July 17, as the autopsy of Vipanjika’s body has not yet been completed.
Police said a case has been registered under Sections 85 (cruelty by a husband or his relatives towards a woman) and 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. Nitheesh, his father, and his sister have been named as the accused in the case.
