Pam Infection in Kerala: 19 people have died in Kerala due to an infection of Ameba named Neglaria Foulri. This is usually called the brain -eating amoeba. It lives in a source of fresh water like amoeba pond and lake.
What is pam: The infection of Pam (Primary Amoebic meningoncephalitis) is spreading rapidly in Kerala. Due to this, 19 people have lost their lives. 61 cases of PAM infection have been registered. PAM transition is due to the amoeba called Neglaria Foulri. This is usually called the ‘brain eating amoeba’.
What is Pam?
The Kerala government has stated that Pam affects the central nervous system of humans. This infection destroys the brain tissue. Due to this, there is a risk of severe brain swelling and death. PAM is rare, but extremely fatal. The mortality rate is high in this disease. Its infection seems more to children, adolescents and young adults.
How does a person find Pam infection?
The Neglaria Foulri Ameba lives in a fresh water source like the pond and lake. If this is amoeba in a pond or lake and a person comes in contact with his water, then there is a risk of getting infected. Amiba enters the human body through the nose. In contaminated water, the risk of swimming, diving or bathing is more at risk of infection. This amoeba lives in hot water. Its infection does not spread from one person to another.
What are the symptoms of Pam infection?
Symptoms of PAM infection are similar to bacterial meningitis. Headache, fever, nausea and vomiting can occur. According to the information given by the Government of Kerala, by the time other common causes of meningitis are revealed and PAM is treated, it is often too late. Pam spreads rapidly in human body. This can lead to death.
How is Pam treated?
In the last six decades, almost all the people left from Pam were diagnosed in pre-cerebral state. Early treatment of PAM and starting antimicrobial cocktail on time is helpful in saving life. The Kerala government has told the people that if they see symptoms like PAM infection after coming in contact with stalled water, then they immediately go to the doctor.

The first case of PAM infection was found in Kerala in 2016
The first case of PAM in Kerala came to light in 2016. After this, by 2023, there were only eight strong cases in Kerala. It saw a huge increase last year. This led to 36 cases and 9 people died. In 2025, 61 cases have been reported so far and 19 deaths were registered.
