Kerala leaders congratulate Sreeshankar, Basil for CWG silver medals in Glasgow

Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan and Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday congratulated M Sreeshankar for winning the silver medal in the men’s long jump at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Satheesan spoke to Sreeshankar over the phone to congratulate him on winning his second successive silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, according to a statement issued by the CMO.

The Kerala athlete created history by becoming the first Indian to win back-to-back medals in the men’s long jump at the Commonwealth Games, the statement said.

The achievement has added another golden chapter to Kerala’s sporting history, Satheesan said.

During the conversation, Sreeshankar urged the CM to further strengthen Kerala’s sports sector, the statement said.

Satheesan assured him that the government would accord the highest priority to the growth and development of the sports sector in the state, it added.

The CM congratulated Kerala athlete Muhammed Basil for winning the silver medal in the men’s 100m T47 para athletics event at the Commonwealth Games.

“With a season-best time of 10.83 seconds, Basil has made the entire nation and Keralam immensely proud. His grit, unwavering determination and outstanding international achievement will inspire generations of young athletes from our state. Wishing our champion many more laurels ahead,” Satheesan said in a post on X.

Vijayan, in a Facebook post, congratulated Sreeshankar on winning the silver medal in the men’s long jump and bringing laurels to the country at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

He said Sreeshankar, who returned to competition after a lengthy layoff due to a serious injury, had overcome adversity through his determination and willpower to win India’s second successive Commonwealth Games medal in the event.

“I wish Sreeshankar the very best in his career. May he continue to scale greater heights on the world stage,” the CPI(M) veteran said.

BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar also congratulated Sreeshankar, saying in a Facebook post that the athlete’s determination, fighting spirit and hard work were an inspiration to every young Indian.

The BJP MLA from Nemom constituency congratulated Basil for winning the silver medal in the men’s 100m T47 event at the Commonwealth Games.

In a separate Facebook post, Chandrasekhar said Basil’s achievement was an inspiration to everyone.
