Actor Kayadu Lohar, who was recently seen alongside GV Prakash Kumar in the creature film Immortal, has opened up about the objectification of women in cinema.
During an interview on Sudhir Srinivasan’s YouTube channel, Kayadu was asked how she feels about scenes that objectify female characters.
She made it clear that she is not comfortable with women being used only for glamour.
“I am definitely not okay with only objectifying,” Kayadu said, adding that she may accept certain scenes if they are genuinely required by the character or story.
However, she stressed that she would not agree to being included in a film simply to attract attention or generate social media buzz.
According to Kayadu, such portrayals may bring fame or trend on Instagram, but that alone is not enough for her.
She also spoke about how difficult it can be for actresses to raise such concerns during filmmaking.
Kayadu said women often feel like they are the only ones questioning certain portrayals, while others dismiss their concerns by saying, “This is how it’s done.”
She believes actresses need to stand their ground and that filmmakers too must recognise that audience attitudes are changing.
Earlier, filmmakers often justified such scenes by claiming that audiences wanted them. But Kayadu feels viewers are now becoming more conscious about how women are represented on screen.
Though she did not name any film, some social media users speculated that she may have been referring to Peddi, starring Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor, which had earlier faced criticism over the portrayal of Janhvi’s character.
The makers later removed the controversial portions and maintained that objectification was never their intention.
On the work front, Kayadu has several films lined up, including The Paradise, Thaaram, Manjanaththi and Suriya 48. She was also seen in Funky, Pallichattambi, Idhayam Murali and I’m Game this year.
