How to offer Arghya to the moon on Karva Chauth?
- Complete the worship ritual of Karva Devi in the evening.
- After this, recite the fast story.
- After the puja is completed, bring the puja thali to the terrace or courtyard of your house.
- Keep a pot filled with water, karva, sieve, rice, sweets, flowers, lamp and wick in the plate.
- When the moon rises, first perform its aarti.
- Then keep a burning lamp in the sieve and look at the moon.
- Looking at the moon, chant mantras and pray for your husband’s long life in your mind.
- After this offer water to the moon. Be sure to put a silver coin and rice in the water used for Arghya.
- Then look at your husband’s face through the same sieve and break the fast by taking water from his hands.
What should be said while offering Arghya to the Moon?

Story of Karva Chauth fast
There is a story related to Karva Chauth, which is as follows, ‘A Brahmin lived in a village. He had 7 sons and one daughter. The daughter’s name was Veeravati. When the time came, the Brahmin married Veeravati to a suitable groom. On Karva Chauth, Veeravati fasted for the long life of her husband but due to being unable to bear the hunger, she fainted. Then his brothers lit a torch from behind the tree and told him that the moon had risen. Following the advice of her brothers, Veeravati ate the food, due to which her husband died. When Indrani, wife of Devraj Indra, came to earth and saw this, she asked Veeravati to observe Karva Chauth fast again next time. Due to the effect of this fast, Veeravati’s husband came alive again and both the husband and wife started living happily.
Karva Chauth fast breaking method
After offering Arghya to the moon on Karva Chauth, women should view their husband’s face through the same sieve through which they viewed the moon. After this, she should drink water from her husband’s hand. The fast should be ended by eating something sweet or fruit. After breaking the fast, one should eat satvik food. Tamasic food (like non-vegetarian, heavy or fried food) should be avoided. Religious rules should be strictly followed while breaking the fast.
