fasting story of blind old mother
There was a blind old woman, who had a son and daughter-in-law. She was very poor. That blind old mother used to worship Lord Ganesha every day and fast on Chauth. One day, pleased with her mother’s worship, Lord Ganesha appeared to her and said, “Old mother, you worship me selflessly every day, ask for whatever you want.” The old lady said, O Lord Ganesh, the destroyer of obstacles, I don’t know how to ask, so what should I ask for? Then Lord Ganesha said, Mother, I will come tomorrow, you should ask your daughter-in-law and son. Then the old lady asked her son and daughter-in-law, the son said that mother should ask for money and the daughter-in-law said that mother should ask for a grandson. The old lady thought that the son and daughter-in-law were talking about their own personal interests.
So the old lady asked the neighbor and the neighbor said, old lady, you have only a little life left. Why should you ask for money and why should you ask for a grandson? You should only ask for your eyes, so that you can spend your life happily. That old mother, after listening to the words of her son, daughter-in-law and neighbour, went inside the house and thought that she should ask for something that would make her son and daughter-in-law happy and also for the welfare of herself. The next day, Lord Ganesha came and said, old mother, ask for it.
After listening to the words of Lord Ganesha, the old mother said, O remover of obstacles, Gods of food, Gods of wealth, Gods of healthy body, give me immortal husbandry, Gods of sister-goddess, let me see my grandson drinking milk from a golden bowl, Gods of immortal marriage and give happiness to the entire family, give me a place at your feet. After listening to the old lady, Ganeshji said – Old mother, you cheated me. And she says that you don’t know how to ask, you will get whatever you asked for. Saying this, Lord Ganesha disappeared. O Lord Ganesha, give to everyone as you gave to the old mother, give to everyone in the same way and shower your blessings on everyone.
Fast story of the moneylender’s seven sons and seven daughters
A moneylender had seven sons and one daughter. The moneylender’s son loved his sister very much. Along with the moneylender, his daughters-in-law and daughter had observed the fast of Chauth. During Chauth fast, the fast is broken only after seeing the moon. When the moneylender’s sons started eating at night, they asked their sister for food. On this the sister told that today is her fast and she can break her fast only by offering food to the moon and eat something. The youngest brother could not see his sister’s condition and he lit a lamp on a distant tree and kept it under a sieve. Shows it to his sister from a distance, the lamp covered with a sieve looks like the moon. In such a situation, it looks like the moon of Chaturthi. The sister also told her sister-in-law that the moon had risen and they should break the fast, but the sister-in-law did not listen to her and did not break the fast.
The sister did not understand the cleverness of her brothers and after seeing it, she offered water to him and ate a morsel of food. As soon as she puts the first piece in her mouth she sneezes. When she puts the second piece, hair comes out in it and when she puts the third piece in her mouth, she gets the news of her husband’s death. She becomes very sad. Her sister-in-law tells the truth as to why this happened to her.
Mother has become angry with him because the fast was broken wrongly. On this she decides that she will not perform the last rites of her husband and will bring him back to life with her chastity. In grief, she sat with her husband’s dead body for a year and kept collecting the grass growing on it.
She kept fast on Chaturthi of the whole year and next year when Kartik Krishna Chaturthi came again, she observed Karva Chauth fast with full rituals. In the evening, she requested the married women to take Yam Sui, give Piya Sui, make me a married woman like you, as a result, with the blessings of Karva Mata and Ganesh Ji, her husband came back to life. Just as Ganpati and Karva Mata listened to him, let everyone listen to him, may everyone’s happiness remain immortal.
Karva Chauth washerman’s fasting story
A devoted washerwoman named Karva lived with her husband in a village situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra river. Her husband was old and weak. One day when he was washing clothes on the bank of the river, suddenly a crocodile came there and started taking the washerman towards Yamalok by pressing his feet in his teeth. The old husband got scared seeing this and when he couldn’t say anything to her, he started calling his wife saying get it done…get it done… When the washerwoman reached there after hearing her husband’s call, the crocodile was about to take her husband to Yamalok. Then Karva tied the crocodile with raw thread and reached the door of Yamraj with the crocodile.
She requested Yamraj to protect her husband and said – Oh God! The crocodile has caught hold of my husband’s legs. You send the crocodile to hell as punishment for this crime. Hearing Karva’s call, Yamraj said – The crocodile still has a lifetime left, I cannot send him to Yamalok yet. On this Karva said- If you do not help me in saving my husband, I will curse you and destroy you. Seeing Karva’s courage, Yamraj also got scared and sent the crocodile to Yampuri. Also blessed Karva’s husband with long life. Since then, Karva Chauth fast on the Chaturthi of Kartik Krishna came into vogue. Even in this modern era, women do it with full devotion and pray to God for the long life of their husbands.
