Story of Kartik Purnima in Hindi

According to Shivpuran, once upon a time there was a mighty demon named Tarakasura. He had three sons, who were also as powerful as their father. When Lord Shiva’s son Kartikeya killed Tarakasura, his sons felt very sad. To take revenge from the gods, he pleased Lord Brahma by doing severe penance. When Brahmaji appeared, he asked for the boon of immortality but Brahmaji refused to grant him this boon.

Then all three of them said to Brahmaji, ‘Please build three such cities for us, on which we can sit and roam in the sky. Let us meet at one place after a thousand years. At that time, if the God can destroy those three cities with a single arrow, then only our death will be possible. Brahmaji gave him this boon. At the behest of Lord Brahma, the architect of the demons, Maydanava, built three cities for them. One of these was of gold, the second of silver and the third of iron.
In this way, roaming in the sky, the three demons started troubling the gods. Then all the gods like Indra came to seek help from Lord Shiva. Hearing the pitiful cry of the gods, Lord Shiva got ready to destroy those Tripuras. Vishwakarma built a wonderful and divine chariot for Lord Shiva. The Moon and the Sun became the wheels of that chariot. Indra, Varun and other gods themselves became the horses of the chariot. Himalaya took the form of a bow and Sheshnag became the string of that bow.
Lord Vishnu became the arrow and Agnidev became its tip. When Mahadev rode on that divine chariot, the demons attacked the gods. This war continues for a long time. During this time, as soon as the Tripuras came in a straight line, Lord Shiva destroyed them by firing an arrow in the form of Vishnu. As soon as this happened, the demons left the battle and ran away and the gods started hailing Mahadev. After ending the Tripuras, Lord Shiva also came to be known as Tripurari.
