Story of Kartik Purnima (Kartik Purnima Katha)
According to mythology, Lord Shiva’s elder son Kartikeya had killed the demon Tarakasura and freed all the gods from his terror. Tarakasura had three sons. Whose names were Taraksha, Kamla and Vidyunmali. His three sons were very sad due to the killing of Tarakasura. All three were very angry with the gods. Tarakasura’s sons thought of taking revenge from the gods and started penance to Lord Brahma.
All three performed hard penance and pleased Brahmadev. After this, all three asked Brahmadev for the boon of immortality, but Brahmadev told them that it was not possible for them to give this boon. He asked the three brothers to ask for some other boon. After this, the three brothers asked Brahmadev to build separate cities for the three brothers. Staying in which they can roam on earth and sky.
When the three brothers meet after a thousand years, the three cities become one. The three brothers told Brahmadev that they would die at the hands of the god who would destroy three cities with a single arrow. Brahmadev gave this boon to the three brothers. All three cities were formed due to the blessing. A city of gold was built for Taraksha, silver for Kamala and iron for Vidyunmali. After this the three brothers took control over all the three worlds.
After this, Devraj Indra became afraid of the three brothers and approached Lord Shiva for help. Then Lord Shiva created a divine chariot. Moon and Sun become the wheels of the chariot. Indra, Yama, Kuber and Varun became the horses of that chariot. Himalaya became the bow and Sheshnag became the string. Then Lord Shiva came riding on that chariot to fight the three demon brothers. There was a war between Lord Shiva and those three demon brothers.
Lord Shiva killed those three brothers by using his divine bow and arrow. This incident happened on the day of Kartik Purnima. Therefore this day is also called Tripurari Purnima. The gods and goddesses were very happy with the death of the three demon brothers. They worshiped Lord Shiva and lit lamps in happiness.
