In Hindu religion, the full moon day of Kartik month is considered the most sacred day of the year. On this day, there is a tradition of special worship of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Today the festival of Kartik Purnima is being celebrated across the country. It is believed that by taking bath in Ganga or any holy river on the day of Kartik Purnima, the sins of many births are destroyed and one attains salvation.
This year this date will start from 10:36 pm on 4th November and will last till 6:48 pm on 5th November. Dev Diwali is also celebrated on this day, when the gods descend from heaven and light lamps on the banks of the Ganga.

According to the scriptures, taking bath in the morning on the day of Kartik Purnima, especially in Brahmamuhurta, is considered very auspicious, because this is the time for spiritual purification and receiving the blessings of God. This year, the auspicious time for bathing in Ganga will be from 4:52 to 5:44 in the morning. It is believed that taking bath at this time purifies both body and mind and sins are eradicated. Those who are unable to go to pilgrimage sites can take bath at home by mixing Ganga water. It is considered auspicious to wear yellow or white clothes after bathing, which are a symbol of truth, peace and devotion.
Importance of donation and lamp donation
On the day of Kartik Purnima, special results are obtained from charity and charity. Donating food, clothes, sesame seeds, ghee or gold and silver to the needy is considered best. It is very auspicious to donate a lamp in the evening during Pradoshkaal (5:15 to 7:50 pm). Lighting a lamp on the banks of Ganga, in a temple or in the courtyard of the house brings auspicious energy and light into life. Offering Arghya to the Moon on this day is also considered very fruitful, because it is a symbol of peace and balance of mind.
Kartik Purnima Puja Method
- After bathing, start worship wearing clean clothes. Clean the place of worship or home temple thoroughly.
- Spread yellow or red cloth on the stool. Install statues or pictures of Lord Vishnu, Mother Lakshmi, Lord Shiva and Moon God.
- Purify the environment by lighting a lamp. Offer flowers, Akshat (rice), Tulsi leaves, incense, lamp, water and naivedya.
- Chant mantras like Om Namo Narayana or Vishnu Sahasranama. Listen to Satyanarayan Katha or organize an event at home.
