Bengaluru: Bengaluru’s M Reddy Sanjana and Tejashwini G Rao broke the state meet record on the opening day of the Karnataka State Junior Athletics Meet at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Tuesday.
16-year-old Sanjana put the shot 15.52m in the girls’ U-18 final, surpassing the 12-year-old meet record of 14.39m set by Nimitha GK.

Sanjana also qualified for the National Youth Championships in Ludhiana, which is the qualifying event for the Youth Olympics in November.
She is also eligible to compete at the South Zone Athletics Championships in Pondicherry in mid-September.
Tejashwini, meanwhile, broke Sanjana’s shot-put (standing) record of 12.00m, set last year, with a throw of 12.89m to win the girls’ U-16 final. The 15-year-old athlete, who is coached by SD Eshan and Kanthamma, also qualified for the South Zone event.
In all, nine meet records fell on the day as competition was held in the U-20, U-18 and U-16 categories.
The men’s U-20 100m final saw an enthralling race to the finish line, with Mysuru’s Chirant P clocking a state meet record of 10.39 seconds in hand timing. Udupi duo Chirag and Savin Thingalaya finished second and third respectively, both clocking 10.58 seconds in hand timing.
Chirant, who trains under coach Rohit Mane in Reliance’s Mumbai, broke the 23-year-old state meet record of 10.40 seconds held by Md Muddasir.
Another Udupi sprinter, Sthuthi P, won the women’s 100m final with a personal best of 11.61 seconds. However, the timing will not be registered as official in the absence of an electronic timing system.
