Released in 2000, Refugee marked the debut for both Kareena and Abhishek. Written and directed by J. P. Dutta, this romantic drama became the fifth highest-grossing film of that year. The narrative followed a young man who assisted individuals in illegally crossing the borders of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh via the Great Rann of Kutch. The film was reportedly loosely based on Keki N. Daruwalla’s short story Love Across the Salt Desert.
