Filmmaker Karan Johar has given a big thumbs-up to Mirzapur: The Movie. Karan Johar, head of Dharma Productions, shared his reaction to the much-awaited theatrical chapter of the popular Mirzapur franchise, praising the film’s energy, iconic characters and new additions. KJo called the film a “solid, kadak, masaledar ride” and confessed he had a blast watching it. The flagship Prime Video franchise makes the leap from streaming to the big screen with this release. Mirzapur: The Movie, which opened in theatres on September 4, 2026, brings back many of the characters that made the series a cultural phenomenon and expands its world with new faces.

Karan took to social media after watching the film and posted his reaction. His review was positive, praising the filmmaker for the return of familiar characters as well as for the newcomers to the franchise. According to Karan, the film manages to retain enough of the franchise’s distinctive flavour and also functions as a theatrical entertainer in its own right.

The  franchise became one of the most popular Indian shows on Amazon Prime Video, building a loyal fanbase for its violent power plays, memorable characters and unpredictable storytelling. It was a huge decision from the makers’ end to put such a successful streaming property into cinemas. But Mirzapur: The Movie manages to do that.

Kaleen Bhaiya and Guddu Pandit are still at the center of the story. The cast is full of familiar faces from the series like Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Harshita Shekhar Gaur and Shweta Tripathi.

The film also introduces new characters and actors to the Mirzapur universe. Vikrant Massey has been replaced by Jitendra Kumar in the series, who is the new Bablu Pandit. Ravi Kishan is a new addition to the franchise and plays an antagonist.
