Kamadeva Story: Why did Kamadeva come alive on the day of Holi? Know the unheard mythological story

Kamadeva and Rati Story: The festival of Holi is not only a celebration of the victory of good over evil, but it is also a day of victory of the power of love and dedication. According to Hindu mythology, Kamadev, the god of love, got a new life on the day of Phalgun Purnima i.e. Holi. After all, why did Mahadev incinerate him and then why did he get reanimated on the day of Holi? Let us know about this amazing story.

The story is related to the killing of Tarakasura.

According to the Puranas, the demon Tarakasura had obtained such a boon by doing rigorous penance that his killing would be possible only at the hands of the son of Lord Shiva. But at that time Lord Shiva was engrossed in deep penance after the sacrifice of Mother Sati. In such a situation, a big problem arose before the gods. The gods thought that if Shiva and Parvati got married, it would be possible to end Tarakasura by the brave man born as their son. But it was not easy to break Shiva’s samadhi.

Kamadeva shot flower arrow

On the request of the gods, Kamadeva, the god of love, decided to use his power. He shot a flower arrow at Lord Shiva. As soon as the arrow had an impact, Shiva’s trance was broken. As soon as Samadhi was broken, Lord Shiva became very angry. He opened his third eye, the flame of which instantly destroyed Kamadeva. Kamadeva’s body was destroyed and he was reduced to mere ashes.

Rati’s lamentation and penance

Kamdev’s wife Rati became distraught after seeing this scene. She apologized to Lord Shiva and prayed to revive her husband. Seeing Rati’s sorrow, Mother Parvati also requested Shiva to have mercy. It is believed that Holashtak is considered to be the beginning of the day Kamadeva was burnt to ashes. After this Rati performed severe penance and pleased Lord Shiva.

Got revival on Phalgun Purnima

Pleased with Rati’s penance and Parvati’s request, Lord Shiva blessed Kamadeva to be resurrected on the day of Phalgun Purnima. Although he did not get life with a body, rather he came into existence as Anang i.e. without body, only as emotion and love. For this reason, Holi is also considered a symbol of love, joy and new beginnings. While the fire of Holi symbolizes the burning of ego and negativity, the celebration of colors gives the message of love and harmony.

Deep connection between Holi and Kamadeva

This story shows that Holi is not only a social festival but also gives a spiritual message. Kamadeva being alive in anang form shows that love never gets destroyed, it only changes its form. Therefore, Holi of Phalgun Purnima is also considered a symbol of love, sacrifice, penance and rebirth.
