Why is the Kalabhairav temple of Kashi special?
According to beliefs, the king of Kashi is Lord Shiva. He has placed Kalabhairav here as Kotwal i.e. Guard. Kalabhairava not only protects this city but also punishes sinners. The description of this temple is also found in the Avanti section of Skanda Purana. The temple that is currently visible here was built by King Bhadrasen. It was renovated by Mahadji Shinde during the Maratha period.
Kalabhairav got freedom from the sins of Brahma murder here
According to Shivpuran, once Brahma started calling himself superior among all the gods. Then at the behest of Shivji, Kalabhairav cut off a head of him. That head clung to Kalabhairav’s hand. Even after a lot of efforts, when he did not come out, Kalabhairava came to Kashi. After coming here, that head of Brahma left Kalabhairav’s hand on its own. In this way, Kalabhairava in Kashi got freedom from the sin of Brahmana. Since then, Kalabhairav is residing here.
