An incident of public humiliation and torture of a loving couple has come to light in Supaul district of Bihar. In Tulsipatti village of Balua Bazar police station area, the villagers first caught a young man and a married woman after seeing them in suspicious circumstances. After this the mob tied both of them to a tree and beat the young man brutally. A villager recorded the video of the entire incident and made it viral on social media.

Panchayat made its own ‘law’
After the incident, Panchayat immediately met in the village. The Panchayat fixed a fine of Rs 2 lakh to settle the matter. Local people claim that an attempt was made to compromise by paying the fine. But during this time someone uploaded the video of the fight on the internet, due to which the matter could not be suppressed.
This incident has once again raised serious questions on the rural justice system. While the law clearly states that no person can be punished without due process of law, here the mob and the Panchayat took upon themselves the role of a court. Lawyers say that such incidents are against both the rule of law and human rights and strict action is necessary against the culprits.
